Simple Backup Tutorial With ShadowBack

ShadowBack has a feature called "Simple Backup". It allows the user to back up data quickly and simply. To get to the Simple Backup screen, first bring up the Main Screen by double clicking on the Shadow Back icon on the desktop, clicking the ShadowBack program icon from the start menu, or double clicking on the ShadowBack icon in the system tray next to the clock. The Simple Backup button is on the left hand side at the top; click on it. This will bring up the Simple Backup Dialog.

The black area on the bottom of the dialog displays what device ShadowBack will back up to. To change the target device, click on the Options button on the bottom left hand corner.

To start a backup, click on either the “Back up my computer” button, or the “Back up my work” button. "Back up my computer" backs up all important files on the computer: the Operating System, program installation files, and user-created data. This option, while the most comprehensive, is the most time consuming and takes the most space and media. "Back up my work" only backs up the unique data on a user's computer; this includes things like email correspondences and personal contacts, Microsoft Office files, MP3s, or images from your digital camera. This option works faster and saves space. However, in the event of a catastrophic computer failure, all programs will have to be re-installed before running the ShadowBack restore. Pick which option is best for you.

The “Turn on Realtime Backup” dialog gives the user the option to allow ShadowBack to continue to back up the computer after the initial backup is done. This allows backups to be as up to date as their latest save. Pick which option is best for you.

After ShadowBack has scanned the hard drive(s) on the computer, it will begin the backup process. If it is backing up to a CDR, DVDR, tape drive or any other drive with removable media, it will ask for new media if the device is empty. Simply follow the dialog instructions at this point, and the backup will eventually complete.
