Jump Starting a Drive

In the mid-eighties I knew a guy who had to manually spin-start his hard drive in order to read data. Apparently the motor was strong enough to keep the drive spinning but not strong enough to get up to the right number of RPMs.

So once the case was pried open he used an eraser at the end of a pencil to push it into spinning. He just left the case top detached, sort of like a cookie jar lid.
